As pollution and fuel costs are increasing at a rapid rate,
so is the need for cars that consume low fuel and cause
less pollution.taday nearly all the cars run either on gas
or diesel.Since both are pollutting and prices are rising
the need for alternate fuels is rising.CNG and LPG are 
being used in modified engines but they are also not that
efficent.This takes us to the next generation of fuels and
cars running on them.Fuels must be renewable.one such 
fuel being tested is called  Biodiesel.this fuel is extracted
from Jatropha  plants.This fuel is being tested by Diamler
Chryshler AG.This is a clean burning fuel and is renewable.
Solar energy is also being tested but this has not been
very effective due to storage and cost concerns.Electric
cars are being used for some time now and are called as
Hybrids because of their ability to run on Gasoline as well
as Electric energy.Toyota Pirus is one such vehicle.The 
problem of these vehicles is short range of travel.The most promising technology that is being developed is called  as the
Fuel Cell Technology or FCT.
                             This technology uses oxygen and hydrogen as fuels.Hydrogen from tanks and oxygen form air is used.
Hydrogen and oxygen are combined together and the resulting chemical energy that is produced during formation of water
is stored as electrical energy which drives the electric motors.The emission of such cars is pure water.The only thing that is
causing a hinderence is the high costs of fuel cells.Many companies are working on fuel cells.Some fuel cell cars are 
Mercedes Benz Necar, GM Zafira based Concept, Nissan FCV, Ford FCV Concept etc.The GM Hywire is  a concept 
which has got a fuelcell powered engine in the floor and Drive by wire controls.In this all  the controls of the car such as 
steering,acceleration,braking etc controlled by wires and computers.This vehicle has no fixed steering and hence it liberates
lots of interior space.In the near future this technology will become common.Cars are being developed that can drive 
themselves or warn passengers during lane change.Cars of the future will be very intilegent and give drivers and passengers
 lot of comfort and safety, besides reducing pollution to a great extent.
